José
Ferreira
Principal Investigator at the Portuguese Oncology Institute (IPO) in Porto.

José Alexandre Ferreira is a luminary in the realm of Chemistry and Food Chemistry, culminating in a PhD that explored the intricacies of glycochemistry in collaboration with the University of Guelph, Canada. His groundbreaking research during his doctoral studies focused on identifying antigenic glycans within the H. pylori pathogen, shedding light on its link to gastric cancer. This groundbreaking work laid the foundation for pioneering serological tools based on glycoarrays, revolutionizing diagnostic possibilities.
Post-PhD, Ferreira's trajectory led him to the Mass Spectrometry Center at the University of Aveiro, where his expertise in protein glycosylation in cancer blossomed. Notably, he founded GlyConStruct, a trailblazing spin-off company dedicated to engineering biotechnological solutions for producing clinically valuable glycopeptides. In 2013, he assumed leadership as a research team coordinator at the Portuguese Institute of Oncology in Porto (IPO-Porto), the nation's foremost oncology center. Concurrently, he became associated with the Institute of Research and Innovation in Health (i3S), University of Porto, and the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory, channeling his efforts into translating glycan-based technologies into practical clinical applications.
His influential role extends beyond academia; Ferreira's role as CEO and co-founder of GlycoMatters, a burgeoning biotech startup focused on advancing glycan-based discoveries for precision oncology, underscores his commitment to transformative scientific innovation. Embodying a strong translational aspect, his research aims to introduce pioneering glycan-based technologies poised to reshape cancer diagnosis and treatment paradigms, evidenced by an extensive portfolio of patents, publications in prestigious journals, and leadership roles in numerous international research projects.
